Forth workshop of MIUrb/AL international research network

Tijuana (Mx), April 2008

On April the 21, 22 and 23, the Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Tijuana - Baja California, Mexico – will host the Fourth workshop of the International Network of researchers of the Observatory on International Migration in Urban Areas of Latin America.
A public seminar on “Immigrants in Tijuana” is scheduled for the first day of the venue, Monday 21st of April 2008, at 10.00 a.m. at the Aula Magna Raúl Rangel of El Colef. International immigration in Tijuana and its impacts on the city are actually nearly invisible issues because Mexico, like many other countries of the Global South, is almost exclusively considered as an emigration country. Nevertheless, estimates and research carried out by scholars, consulates and non-governmental organizations show that, like those in developed countries, also many cities of the developing world are experiencing a steady growth in the number of their foreign residents, many of whom are undocumented. This phenomenon is often sub-estimated by official statistics, censuses and population surveys. Trough the seminar " Immigrants in Tijuana", MIUrb/AL Observatory aims at i) analysing the situation of immigrants arrived in Tijuana from different parts of the world, particularly in Latin America; ii) highlighting the challenges of governing growing foreign populations and iii) discussing the results of the research activities carried out in this city for the Observatory.
A selected team of migration experts will further develop the discussion on international migration in cities in developing countries during closed-door workshops that will be held on Tuesday the 22nd and Wednesday the 23rd. A new research project on "international immigration in cities of Latin America" will be also produced.
