THE INTERCULTURAL CITY. Migration, Minorities and the Management of Diversity
Edited by Giovanna Marconi and Elena Ostanel
(May 2015, IB Tauris, Londra)
The book is about the notion of the intercultural city and explores, through theoretical reflections as well as case studies, whether and how it can be realized. The objective is to probe into the notion of the intercultural city under the assumption that so far the feasibility of it has been addressed in largely unsatisfactory ways.
Thanks to the analysis of several case studies from different national contexts, the book will address a more pragmatic notion of intercultural cities produced by local urban policies, probing that difference must become a “concrete realization” built on a common understanding of sense- and place-making. Based on the principle that all individuals have the same rights, in particular the right to the city, governments must assume diversity is a substantial component in the process of city-making. The intercultural city hinges on the elimination of all material and immaterial boundaries and promote policies capable of promoting sustainable urban inclusion and cohesion.
